Reusable Biological Waste Containers

Medical waste requires careful handling to avoid contamination. Disposing of medical waste in a secure medical waste container protects personnel from coming into contact with infectious materials. Sharps, biohazardous materials, cytotoxic materials, and pharmaceuticals are all types of medical waste that require proper waste management.

At Bondtech, we offer medical waste bins from 18 to 200-gallon sizes. They are long-lasting with chemical resistance and puncture-proof construction for holding sharps.

The Functions of Medical Waste Containers

Medical waste containers are essential to healthcare facilities, tattoo parlors, and veterinary clinics. Sharps, biohazardous waste, and materials contaminated with bodily fluid require disposal in medical waste containers to prevent accidental contact with staff and patients. Typical waste bins do not have the security and labeling to meet the demands of medical waste disposal.

Medical waste containers are color-coded to make identification and disposal simple:

  • Red waste containers. For biohazardous waste and sharps
  • Blue waste containers. For non-RCRA pharmaceutical waste such as antibiotics
  • Yellow waste containers. For chemotherapy waste
  • Black waste containers. For P-listed drugs and other RCRA-regulated hazardous materials

Items such as diapers, soiled linens, cardboard packaging, and trash should not be disposed of in medical waste containers.

Sharps Waste

Medical Waste Containers

Sharps waste includes sharp medical instruments like blades, needles, and syringes that require secure disposal in the correct container even if they are unused. There are four categories of sharps: biohazardous, radioactive, chemically contaminated, and non-contaminated. Each sharps container must carry a label for strict observation by law.

Sharps require particular care because they can penetrate the gloves and the skin of staff and patients, risking harmful contamination. The labeling and unique design of sharps containers prevent staff from being cut or pricked while disposing of sharps waste. Sharps are often picked up by a third party specializing in their disposal. Once picked up, reusable sharps can be professionally sterilized and disposable sharps are safely destroyed.

Sharps Waste Containers

Sharps waste containers prevent staff and patients from being cut or pricked by sharp waste. They must be closed, leak-proof, puncture-proof, and clearly labeled to limit potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens like HIV, HCV, HBV, and many others that could spread due to improper contact with contaminated sharps. It is important to not fill sharps containers past the fill line to prevent accidental sticking.

Sharps waste containers may be reusable after sterilization or disposable after a single-use. There are varieties made for heavy use in healthcare facilities and light-duty use in household settings.

Pharmaceutical Waste Containers

Pharmaceutical waste results from dispensing and administering drugs. Pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics generate large amounts of pharmaceutical waste. Categories of pharmaceutical waste include:

  • Hazardous drug waste. Hazardous drug waste consists of potentially deadly or harmful drugs that require disposal under strict control.
  • Controlled drug waste. Controlled drug waste has abusive or addictive properties and is regulated by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). It requires collection by a waste management company that meets DEA regulations for auditing, consolidating, packing, and transporting.
  • Non-controlled prescription drug waste. This type of pharmaceutical drug waste can cause harm if administered incorrectly and must be incinerated at a medical disposal facility in certain states.
  • Over-the-counter drug waste. Over-the-counter drug waste should be disposed of in pharmaceutical waste containers to prevent contamination of water and landfills.
